These are debates looking at poverty issues.  There were many extra programmes produced to accompany the global broadcast in November 2012. These are some of the highlights.

BBC World Debate



At the BBC World Debate, the panel included Tony Blair, former UK Prime Minister; Oby Ezekwesili from the Open Society Foundation, Africa; Moeltesi Mbeki, Chair of SA Institute of International Affairs; and Vandana Shiva, Indian activist, environmentalist and scientist.

DR Why Poverty? Debate

RTHK Pannel Discussion

As part of the Why Poverty? Broadcast in China (Hong Kong), RTHK hosted a number of pannel discussions on poverty.

As part of the EBU Why Poverty? Day the Vatican Radio hosted a special service dedicated to Why Povert? See the video of the broadcast here.

IDFA Q&As



Why Poverty? had a very strong presence at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) this year.

From the 21st November there is post screening debate on Give Us the Money - not strictly speaking broadcast, but well worth a watch, with Jamie Drummond from ONE, and Boss Lindquist the film's director.




From the 20th November there is a post-screening Q&A with Ben Lewis, director of Poor Us.











From the 19th November there is a post-screening Q&A with the directors of Solar Mamas, Mona Eldaief & Jehane Noujaim.






Debate at the UN



Why Poverty? launched at the UN in September. There were keynote speeches from the UN Deputy Secretary General, Mr Jan Eliasson, and HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and a great debate. You can watch the highlights here.

The debate included director and political activist Danny Glover; the Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Post-2015 Development Planning, Amina Mhohammed; the Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry of Zambia, Robert Sichinga, and  the Danish Minister of Development Cooperation, Christian Friis Bach. The event was moderated by BBC journalist Fergal Keane. Mette Hoffmann Meyer and Nick Fraser also added their voices to the launch.
